Stay Cool: Maintain Your Cooling System

Performing routine maintenance on your car is vital to keeping it running safely and smoothly. While a car is running, the engine can become extremely hot and it is the job of the cooling system to remove excess heat that would otherwise damage the car’s engine. It is extremely important to maintain the car's cooling system and listed below are ways you can do this:

  • Antifreeze/Coolant - While water is best for holding heat, water can freeze so most cars require a mixture of water and ethylene glycol, referred to as coolant or antifreeze. The coolant is circulated throughout the engine absorbing excess heat and keeping the engine at the proper temperature. Since coolant is a vital part of the cooling system, it is important to check it at least once a month.
  • Coolant Hoses - Coolant hoses carry coolant throughout the engine, so it is important to check and make sure they are not showing any signs of wear, like cracking or splitting. If you see any signs of wear, replace the hose immediately.
  • Water Pump - The water pump is a vital part that helps keep the car engine cool and is driven by a belt. It is important to check this belt for signs of wear, like cracks. If you notice the belt is showing signs of wear, replace it immediately.
