Are All Certified Pre-Owned Vehicles The Same?

Watch Out for Dealer Certified Vehicles

There are two types of certified preowned vehicles: ones that are backed by the manufacturer, like AcuraCertified Pre-Owned Vehicles and ones that are certified by someone else. Watch out for dealerships and independent used car lots that simply slap a "certified" sticker onto a windshield and then try to pass that vehicle off as having gone through the same checks as dictated by a manufacturer's program.

How can you tell the difference? First, only a branded dealership can sell its own manufacturer-certified vehicles. So if a XYZ dealer is trying to sell you an Acura, or if you're shopping at an independent lot, you can be confident that the vehicle in question is dealer-certified. Most Franchised Dealerships will use only the Manufacturer's Certification Program and will have the Manufacturer's logo like the Acura Logo you see above. If the vehicle does not have the official Manufacturer's logo it is not really certified.  Manufacturer's Certified Pre-Owned Vehicles whether Acura or a different make are worth more and give piece of mind where as an Independent or Dealer Certification means nothing. It's just a way for the dealer or independent to try to charge more money without having to meet any of the stringent requirements the manufacturers impose on their Certified Vehicles.
